For Christine, the secret to staying active isn't discipline or grit, it’s pure enjoyment. She believes that having fun while exercising is essential, as slogging away at something that yields results without any actual enjoyment simply doesn't work for her.

A Surprising Discovery

Christine’s journey at Salisbury Aquatic Centre began with a bit of healthy skepticism. When she saw a special trial offer, she decided to give it a go, though she wasn't convinced it would be a match.

"I thought, ‘why not.’ The offer was too good to miss, and I just knew it was going to confirm that water and I were poles apart," she laughs. "How wrong could I have been! I absolutely loved it and subsequently joined the centre."

Connection and Community

Beyond the physical benefits, Christine views the centre as a vital tool for mental and social wellbeing. She notes that as we get older, it can be easy to retreat from social circles, which can be a hard habit to break.

"There’s a tendency to lock ourselves away from living and not socialise. That is definitely not good for us both physically and mentally," Christine explains. "That’s where regular aqua and fitness classes come in they become something to truly look forward to."

Finding the Fun

For Christine, the atmosphere in the pool is what makes the difference. Whether it's the social interaction or the music, she leans into the joy of the movement.

"Having fun, laughing, chatting, even singing and dancing is a vital part of maintaining my mental health," she says. "Those feel good endorphins that erupt when I’m having fun are priceless. Some classes play absolute bangers of songs I definitely sing to those, even with misheard lyrics!"

Christine’s Advice

Her message to anyone on the fence is simple: Don’t settle for a workout that feels like a chore.

"Find something you enjoy. Being fit shouldn’t be a solemn, miserable slog. Salisbury Aquatic has a great range of fitness classes and instructors, so there’s something for everyone. Plus, friendships are made and grow over a coffee after, right along with those feel good endorphins."
